FRECON selected as advisor for SeaTwirl’s unique floating vertical-axis wind turbine

FRECON selected as advisor for SeaTwirl’s unique floating vertical-axis wind turbine

Press release

Vertical and floating wind farms for greater depths may very well be next generation’s offshore solution. SeaTwirl is behind the innovative project SeaTwirl S2, where FRECON will contribute with more than 20 years of experience with hub and tower designs for the largest wind turbine manufacturers in the industry.

The Swedish tech company SeaTwirl AB is quite a pioneer when it comes to offshore wind turbine concepts. Their vertical-axis design is innovative and differs significantly from conventional offshore solutions. At the same time, their wind turbine is floating, making it particularly suitable for the deep sea. The project is being followed with great attention in the wind power sector and is supported by EU funds.

Joining the project is the engineering house FRECON, who will design and calculate the entire tower design, hubs, main shaft and internals for SeaTwirl’s new S2 unit. Since March 2021, a dedicated team of specialized engineers has worked on the structural components of the design and performed calculations in relation to e.g. service life and fatigue.

Trustworthy partner in the wind industry
FRECON contributes with more than 20 years of experience as consultants for some of the largest wind turbine manufacturers in the industry and has gained extensive expertise in tower designs, hubs, internals and platforms. The extensive experience forms the basis for the collaboration with SeaTwirl and the groundbreaking wind turbine concept.

“SeaTwirl’s concept is innovative and completely unique. We are very excited to bring our knowledge into play in a new setup that has not been seen before in the wind power industry,” says FRECON’s CEO, Claus Mølgaard Jensen.

In 2020, FRECON’s competencies were already put into play at SeaTwirl for a number of smaller calculation tasks, and this was a great opportunity for FRECON to showcase the qualifications as a trusted collaboration partner and advisor in the wind industry.

I look forward to see the results from FRECON’s work. Their experience from projects with various advance concept developments and design work within wind power is instrumental for an efficient design work,” says CTO at SeaTwirl, Jonas Boström.

SeaTwirl’s S2 1MW pilot will be installed in Norway during 2022.

Information:

SeaTwirl AB is a Swedish tech company with the vision to become a global leader within floating offshore wind power. SeaTwirl’s unique and innovative design is based on a patented technology, which is particularly suitable for sea depths of 100 meters or more. The company’s first prototype, SeaTwirl S1 with a power output capacity of 30 kW, was installed at sea in 2015. The company is now fully focused on completing the full-size pilot, SeaTwirl S2, which will have a capacity of 1 MW and a height of 55 meters above sea level. The S2 project is supported with EUR 2.48 million by the European Innovation Council (EIC).

FRECON A/S is an engineering house founded in 1999. They specialize in mechanical solutions – from large, complex industrial equipment to small mechanical tools and components. FRECON has its roots in the wind power industry as a reliable collaboration partner but has also built up a large customer base in the food industry and the metal and machinery industries. Their head office is located in Horsens in Denmark with additional locations in Esbjerg and Tommerup.
